Administrative and territory division: Tomsk Oblast consists of 4 city districts (Tomsk, Strezhevoy, Kedroviy, Seversk), 16 municipal districts, including 3 towns and 117 rural settlements, 576 country locations.
Geography and Nature
Geographical position: Siberia, South-Eastern part of Siberian plain.
Neighbouring territories: Krasnoyarsk territory, Kemerovo, Omsk, Novosibirsk and Tyumen oblasts.
Total area: 316.9 thousand square km.
Climate: Average temperature (on 1.01.2006): July +19,4 ºС., January – -15,9 ºС.
The highest point is 274 m above the sea level.
The lowest point is 34 m above the sea level.
The swamps total area: 91.573 thousand square km (28.9 per cent of the whole area), Thw Vasyugan Swamp covers 53 thousand square km (the largest swamp in the world).
Natural resources: oil, gas, timber, peat, kaolin, hard melting clay, glass-making sands, ilmenite-zirconium sands, iron ore, bauxite, brown coal, zinc; there are also indications for deposits of gold, platinum, titanium and zirconium.
Population
Total population for 01.01.2008 : 1.0332 million people, 66 per cent are urban. There are more than 80 nationalities. Also, small minorities (fewer than 100 people), such as chulymtzi and keti live on the territory of Tomsk Oblast.

Economic potential
Gross Regional Product (GRP) in 2007: 219,139 bln rubles.
Export in 2007: 918 079,2 thousand US dollars.

Transport
Internal transportation is provided basically by river vessels and automobiles.
The length of the local shipping ways along the river Ob and its feeders is about 5 thousand km.
The length of public highways with paved surface (6 405 km) is 20.2 km of the area per 1000 sq. km; 2 district centers (Alexandrovskoe, Beliy Yar) and 2 towns (Strezevoy and Kedroviy) are not have the road connection with the Oblast centre.
The Oblast has 345 km of railways; the main railway is Beliy Jar – Tomsk – Taiga.
Cargo shipment and public transportation (including delivering of newspapers and magazines) are provided to many settlements only by air.
In November and March winter roads are used in order to supply the North of the oblast with cargo.
