Tomsk Region getting ready to launch DVB-T2 broadcasting

24.07.2012

By the end of 2012 Tomsk Region will starts test DVB-T2 broadcasting in six regions – Tomsk, Strezhevoy, Kolpashevo, Bely Yar, Molchanovo, and Volodin. In 2013 the entire Tomsk Region should be covered.

The digital on-air terrestrial broadcasting network is deployed in the region under the federal target program "Development of television and radio broadcasting in the Russian Federation for 2009-2015". The initial plan was to launch broadcasting of one DVB-T multiplex consisting of 8 Russian TV channels and 3 radio channels. However, after the Russian Government decided to implement the DVB-T2 standard, the switch of the digital on-air terrestrial broadcasting to the DVB-T2 standard was rescheduled from 2015 to 2012.

The experts say that receiving the DVB-T2 signal may be a problem because it requires a digital TV set with a DVB-T2 tuner with MPEG4 support or a special digital top box, the so-called Set Top Box with a DVB-T2 tuner and not every household has such equipment. DVB-T receivers do not support the DVB-T2 standard. The problem can be resolved by installing special top boxes. Such top boxes of foreign manufacture already exist. Also, Russian producers have developed MPEG4 DVB-T2 top box models.

The signal can be received with an ordinary decimetric wave antenna which can be installed both indoors and outdoors depending on the receiving conditions and the distance from the broadcasting station.
