Tomsk Region became pilot ground for installation of large-scale information and services management network

28.03.2012

Installation of information and services management network equipment which is the world's first example of a comprehensive approach to the introduction of digital television and provision of digital TV-based services, started today in the Tomsk SEZ.

Russia is currently implementing radio and television development programs and by 2015 the entire country is expected to switch to digital television. Some regions are already making their own attempts.

The project being implemented in Tomsk introduces not only a different broadcast format but also interactive television. In other words that were used at the project start-up, Tomsk switches to multimedia information and communication networks. The project is based on commercial solutions developed by the Moscow Radio Institute and Tomsk innovative company Elecard Devices.

"Together with television, it offers a package of various useful services for individuals such as a possibility to choose what to watch or pay bills online, and use many other services," says Deputy General Director of the Moscow Radio Institute Anatoly Nazarenko.

This system allows any individual even in very remote locations to get access to the services provided to those living in Tomsk or Moscow. Examples of such services are various payment systems, federal and municipal services (get a certificate, apply for a foreign passport, etc.) Private security is an important aspect. The information and services management network is capable of warning the people (even locally, in a single house) on potential emergency situations and giving guidelines how to act.

The installation of the equipment has started today. The system will start broadcasting once the installation is completed (completion is expected late in March). After a trial period in Tomsk, this experience will be replicated throughout Russia and may be abroad as foreign countries have already shown interest in the system.
