21.07.2014

Sergey Zhvachkin, Tomsk region governor, has held a meeting, where the members discussed the museum of science and technology construction in Tomsk

By the decision of the governor, the museum will be built on the coast of river Tom. “There is no question about reconstruction or purchase of a building,” said the governor, “The new museum will be built from scratch, right where it should be – on the coast near the universities.”

As Viktor Vlasov, Tomsk State University of Architecture and Building rector, reported to the governor, international contest was announced July 7 for the development of architectural concept of the museum. Not only Russian companies are planning to participate, but also teams from Italy and France. After qualification August 8, the judges will determine five finalists that have to submit architectural solutions before November 1. Simultaneously the university is surveying the construction site, and the results will be sent to state expert review before August 15.

Viktor Dyomin, vice-rector for academic affairs of National Research Tomsk State University has presented Sergey Zhvachkin with the results of working under the museum concept, that saw the participation of  Tomsk residents as well as experts from Saint Petersburg and Austria. The main idea of the museum – Science for People, it will be targeting different age groups and, aside from exhibition rooms, it will also feature six open active laboratories of six Tomsk universities.

The concept was also discussed by vice-governor Igor Shaturny and Yuri Gurdin, Tomsk mayor Ivan Klayn and TSU rector Eduard Galazhinsky.

Sergey Zhvachkin drew the conclusion: “It is our goal to make sure that after visiting museum people would fall in love with science, learn about achievements of Tomsk scientists and search knowledge. The museum must be equally interesting for little children, as well as for students, science elite and people from different spheres. That’s why it’s important at the stage of design to consider the philosophy of the museum, its “filling". It can’t be standard and blank.”

The governor ordered to create a “road map” for the project and engage as many participants as possible for its execution – from big heads of architecture to students and pupils.  Sergey Zhvachkin: “With the support of our president we are building the best museum of science and technology. That’s why we shouldn’t miss a single bright idea”.
