Tomsk Region is one of the regions with the low rate of ethnic tension

14.10.2014

Center for the Study of Ethnic Conflict and Federal Expert Network Regions Club published the second rating of ethnic tension in Russian regions during spring-fall 2014. Tomsk Region hit the list of the regions with the low ethnic tension, having raised its position as compared with the first rating where it was mentioned among the regions with the average rate of ethnic tension.

Experts have been carrying out their research in all Russian regions from April till October. As a result, they made a map of conflicts dividing regions into five groups according to their rate of ethnic tension — from the highest rate to the lowest one. The Tomsk Region made it into the fourth group of regions with low rate of tension together with its "neighbors" in Siberian Federal District — Irkutsk, Altai, Krasnoyarsk regions and Altai and Buryatia republics. Experts point out that there are almost no ethnic conflicts in the region and those that take place are insignificant and do not cause any consequences.

In comparison with the first rating compiled over the period from fall of 2013 to spring 2014, the Tomsk Region has improved its position and moved from the group of regions with the average tension rate to the group with the low rate.

The most troubled regions in the context of ethnic tension are Moscow, Dagestan and Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District, among less troubled regions there are 30 regions which include Kemerovo and Omsk regions, Tyva and Khakasiya. The next rating is going to be published in April, 2015.
