The Tomsk region is establishing the Space Project Development Consortium

23.09.2014

According to Mikhail Sonkin, the Tomsk Region deputy governor on science and educational block and innovative policy, Tomsk scientists will take part in the unique space project — development of new generation satellites which are able to join into groups. This work will require establishment of the consortium of academic institutes, universities and enterprises.

Mikhail Sonkin, vice governor, emphasized: “We are talking about opportunities to develop entire orbital robotic groupings (clusters) which are able to complement each other and solve various practical tasks. This is a new generation robotics. We have a high scientific and technical potential in Tomsk which makes it possible to solve this task”.

In the opinion of Sergey Psakhye, director of Institute of Strength Physics and Materials Science, SB RAS, establishing a system of small-size robotic space flying devices weighing from 1.5 kg  (small satellites) in space industry gives new capabilities. In particular, satellites can exchange information, self-learn and upgrade without leaving the orbit. Robotics systems made of small satellites can provide ecological and geographical monitoring, provide communications and solve many other tasks.

Institute of Strength Physics and Materials Science, four National Research universities (Tomsk Polytechnic University, Tomsk State University,  Samara Aerospace University and Moscow Aviation University), Information Satellite Systems Corporation and Rocket and Space Corporation Energia were initiators of the project.

According to vice governor Mikhail Sonkin the consortium structure will be expanded. At present interaction among its participants is performed on the basis of Tomsk Polytechnic University,  organizational work is the responsibility of  Mezhotraslevoy Analitichesky Tsentr, OJSC supported by the RF Ministry of Education and Science. When the organizational procedures are completed the consortium can participate in various federal programs.
