Youth from Siberia and Far East come to Tomsk international forum

June 10–12 as part of 150 anniversary of voluntary Korean resettlement in Russia, international youth of Siberia and Far East forum “United we stand” will take place in Tomsk.

The forum is organized by Tomsk State Pedagogical University with the support of Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, Tomsk region administration office and All-Russian Korean Association.  

According to Oleg Kim, council chair of national and cultural Korean autonomy of the Tomsk region, the forum will become one of the key events among others, dedicated to 150 anniversary of Korean resettlement in Russia.  Tomsk residents have already learned about New Year’s celebrations oriental style, as well as visited taekwondo seminar, hosted by four-time world champion, Korean world-class teacher Lee Yong Il.

According to Dmitry Nasonov, head of department for youth policy and character building of Tomsk State Pedagogical University, the main objective of international forum “United we stand” is the retention of national identity, history, traditions and culture of peoples of Russia, including Russian speaking Koreans. As part of forum, which will attract 500 representatives of Siberian and Far Eastern universities and national youth organizations, there will also be panel discussions “Ways and forms of better communication between the peoples of Russia” and “Scientific and expert support of youth policy in the field of international interaction: problems and perspectives”, as well as “round tables” “Inter-regional international interaction of children and youth organizations of Siberia and Far East” and “Subculture as international collaborative environment.” The members of the forum will plant the trees in the Druzhba alley in Lagerny garden and sum up the results of the contest among the Koreans, receiving education in Russia, “Best essay in the Russian language “Why I see my future in Russia.”

On the last day of the forum, June 12, in the Grand concert hall (12a Lenin Sq.) Korean culture festival will take place. Its star guest will be Republican Korean Theater of musical comedy from Almaty — the only Korean theater in the post-Soviet space.

The festivities will end in September with Korean movie week and international scientific conference for the retention of Korean identity.

Forum “United we stand” has federal status and is conducted pursuant to action plan, approved by Russian Ministry of Regional Development, in terms of 150 anniversary of voluntary Korean resettlement in Russia.

The first 14 Korean families (65 people) moved to the Russian Empire January 1864 and established a settlement in Tizinkhe in Primorye. Today more than 150 thousand Koreans in Russia live, with 1 206 in the Tomsk region.
