31.05.2012

A 3D TV project developed by Moscow Television Research Institute and Tomsk innovative companies Triaxes Vision and Elecard was awarded a Nikola Tesla gold medal of the International Inventors' Federation Association at ITEX 2012, an international showcase of innovations and inventions.

ITEX 2012 was held in the second half of May and gathered 1,200 companies and research centers from all around the world. The Russian delegation presented a 2D/3D DVB-T compatible stereoscopic digital television system which took the only Best Invention gold medal at ITEX 2012.

The project aims at the deployment of a next generation 3D television broadcasting system in Russia which can support various devices, whether it's black and white, color, plasma, LCD, or 3D TV sets. Thus, Russia will not simply enter the era of digital television but will leap into the third dimension.

The project developers have received several patents on a number of broadcasting elements. The next big stage of the project is scheduled for 2012-2013.

Background

The project started in 2008. The first demonstration was held in 2009 in Kazan, Tatarstan, with support from businesses such as Kazan's Center, Moscow's Trinity, and Moscow's Samsung. The first experimental DVB-T broadcasting of 2D/3D video was held in Moscow in May 2011 at SvyazExpocomm 2011. During the demonstration, video was shown on large screens, and the audience did not need glasses to perceive the 3D effect.

In November 2011, the 2D/3D DVB-T project was awarded a certificate and a gold medal at iENA 2011, the 63th International Trade Fair "Ideas – Inventions – New Products" (Nuremberg, Germany).
