Gas-Generator Plant Using Biofuel Developed in Tomsk

25.11.2013

A new development of manufacturers and scientists of Tomsk will make it possible to charge a cellphone, watch TV and boil water by means of a power plant, which is a furnace that can be fired with wood, wood chips, saw dust, coal and even turf.

The developers have introduced the first working model and connected a kettle and a light bulb to it. Further on, they will develop a standard model range of small-scale devices for electric and heat power generation.

By the beginning of summer the project coordinators will produce two industrial installations with the capacity of 15 and 25 kW and develop the technology for small-scale-batch production. The plant will produce 5-15 such power plants a month. According to the manufacturers’ estimates the cost of one gas-generation plant 15 kW will not exceed 600 thousand rubles and will pay for itself during 3-4 months.

Similar plants already exist in the world; however, most of them have a disadvantage: gas produced from burning wood and shredding contains many impurities and resins which are deposited on the engine mechanisms, which quickly leads to its degradation. The development of Tomsk scientists has know-how in producing a cleaner synthetic gas. Besides, this installation will not discharge harmful gases into atmosphere.

According to Deputy Governor for Innovation Policy Aleksey Knyazev, such plants will be used by mobile crews that gather wild harvest as such small-scale equipment can be put in a truck and used in forest for drying clothes, mushrooms, for blast-chillers.
