20.11.2013

All-Russian conference “Highly relevant issues on extraction, production and application of rare-earth elements in Russia” was launched today in the region, bringing together more than 200 specialists of GK Rosatom, OJSC TVEL, scientific-research institutes, institutions of higher education and specialized companies from Russia, Kazakhstan and Belorussia.

Alexander Fedenev, Deputy Governor welcomed the participants on behalf of the Governor of the Tomsk Region. He strongly emphasized that nowadays the level of application of rare earth metals is an indicator of scientific and technological development of a particular sector of economy, which promotes mineral raw material savings, environmental improvements, delivering national security. I.e. rare earth – is a strategic element of an innovation-based economy.

The Tomsk region is able to significantly contribute to development of rare earth industry in Russia. There are substantial reserves of titanium and zirconium dioxides amassed mainly at the alluvial ilmenite-zirconium deposits-Tuganskoe and Georgievskoye. The research and development of new technologies for all areas of the rare earth industry are performed in the laboratories TPU, TGU and STI. Scientific schools have been evolved, skilled workers are trained. Siberian chemical plant has proven experience on creating production of rare-earth elements, as well as working with fluoride technologies.

All these factors, according to Andrey Makaseev, the Head of the Department of science and innovation policy of the Tomsk Region Administration suggest the creation of a rare earth metal cluster in the region, which will help the Tomsk Region to enter the market of intelligent developments and rare earth products.

We remind that the all-Russian conference “Highly relevant issues on extraction, production and application of rare-earth elements in Russia” is to be held in Tomsk from 28 to 30 November. Its co-organizers are Rosatom State Corporation, the Tomsk Region Administration, Seversk Institute of Technology of National Research Nuclear University, MEPhI.
